Porvoo in 60 seconds

Chartered in 1346, Porvoo (Borgå) is Finland's second-oldest town, situated just fifty kilometres east of Helsinki along the meandering Porvoonjoki river. Its postcard signature is the string of rust-red ochre wooden storehouses lining the riverbank — originally painted in the late 18th century in honour of the visiting King Gustav III of Sweden. Cobblestone alleyways lined with pastel wooden artisan cottages climb gently towards Porvoo Cathedral, where in 1809 Tsar Alexander I convened the historic Diet of Porvoo, swearing to respect Finnish laws and religion and creating the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland. The town was the beloved home of Finland's national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg; today, bakeries serve his namesake almond-and-rum pastry, the Runebergintorttu, year-round. Browsing design boutiques, sampling handmade Brunberg chocolates, and dining on seasonal Nordic river dishes make Porvoo an irresistible escape.
