Počitelj Fortress (Kula)
Commanding medieval fortress crown built in the 14th and 15th centuries with an octagonal defensive tower
Climb into the hollow octagonal watchtower for a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the entire Neretva canyon.

In 60 seconds
Rising like a dramatic natural amphitheatre from the left bank of the Neretva River 30 kilometres south of Mostar, UNESCO-tentative Počitelj is one of the most complete and stunning surviving medieval-Ottoman fortified settlements in Europe. Constructed inside a natural limestone hollow, its stepped stone alleyways, drystone walls, and pomegranate gardens climb precipitously toward the commanding octagonal Gavrakapetan Tower (Kula). Founded by King Tvrtko I of Bosnia in 1383 and heavily fortified under King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary before falling to the Ottomans in 1471, Počitelj features landmark Islamic architecture including the 1563 Šišman Ibrahim Pasha Mosque, a classic hammam, and an open-air artists' colony.
