Palanga in 60 seconds

Bordering the Baltic Sea north of Klaipėda, Palanga is Lithuania's undisputed summer capital, famous for its vast sweeps of powdery white sand dunes, coastal pine groves and aristocratic 19th-century spa heritage. Transformed in the late 19th century by the noble Tiškevičius (Tyszkiewicz) family into a fashionable European sea resort, Palanga centres on the majestic Neo-Renaissance Tiškevičius Palace, which houses one of the world's most extensive collections of Baltic amber (over 30,000 pieces, including rare fossil inclusions). The palace is surrounded by Birutė Botanical Park, an 80-hectare masterpiece sculpted by French landscape genius Édouard André. At the seaside, the pedestrian J. Basanavičiaus promenade buzzes with lively holiday atmosphere, culminating in the iconic 470-metre L-shaped wooden pier (Palangos tiltas) where thousands gather every evening to watch the sun sink into the Baltic Sea.
