Orava Castle in 60 seconds

Perched like an eagle's aerie atop a 112-metre vertical limestone needle above the rushing Orava river, Orava Castle (Oravský hrad) is one of the most dramatically situated fortresses in Europe. Built after the 1241 Mongol invasion to guard the northern trade road into Poland, the castle grew organically over seven centuries across three levels: the Lower Castle palace, the Middle Castle residential chambers, and the vertigo-inducing Upper Castle Citadel glued to the sheer rock pinnacle. Its Gothic-Renaissance silhouette is so evocative that German director F.W. Murnau chose it as Count Orlok's sinister home in the 1922 silent horror masterpiece *Nosferatu*. Today, visitors can climb the hundreds of stone steps connecting the levels and enjoy traditional wooden raft rides along the river below.
