Oradea in 60 seconds

Positioned along the Crișul Repede River near the Hungarian border, Oradea is Romania's undisputed capital of Art Nouveau and Secessionist architecture. Over the last decade, an ambitious city-wide restoration program has rejuvenated scores of late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century palaces in pastel shades of mint, rose, and gold. The architectural showpiece is the Black Eagle Palace (Vulturul Negru), a stunning 1908 complex with a glass-canopied Y-shaped shopping gallery and stained glass eagle medallions. Just across the river lies the star-shaped medieval Oradea Fortress, while nearby thermal springs have fueled curative mineral baths since Roman antiquity.
