Nafplio in 60 seconds

Nafplio is widely celebrated as Greece's most romantic and architecturally refined coastal town, gracefully nestled beneath the rocky brow of the Akronafplia peninsula. Briefly the first capital of newly independent Greece between 1829 and 1834, its historic centre is an exquisite ensemble of Venetian mansions, neoclassical townhouses, bougainvillea-covered alleys and Italianate marble squares. Towering nearly a thousand steps above is the formidable 18th-century Palamidi fortress, while out in the blue bay floats the waterborne citadel of Bourtzi.
