Vathia
A hill of stone tower houses
Dozens of tall stone towers clustered on a ridge above the sea, mostly empty and hauntingly beautiful at sunset.

In 60 seconds
The Mani is the central of the Peloponnese's three southern fingers, a rugged spine of the Taygetos mountains running down to Cape Tainaron, once thought to be a gateway to the underworld. Its people, never fully subdued by the Ottomans, built villages of stone tower houses for their feuds; Vathia, on its hill, looks like a medieval Manhattan. Kalamata, the lively city at the head of the gulf, gives its name to the famous olives. On the west coast, Kardamyli is a pretty seaside village where the writer Patrick Leigh Fermor built his house; further south are the walled town of Areopoli, the harbour of Limeni and the Diros caves, explored by boat along an underground river. Swim from the rocks, walk old mule paths and eat simply. Four days.
