Lukomir & Bjelašnica in 60 seconds

Perched precariously at 1,469 metres on the southern slopes of Mount Bjelašnica high above the precipitous 800-metre abyss of the Rakitnica Canyon, Lukomir is Bosnia and Herzegovina's highest and most isolated permanent settlement. A living ethnological sanctuary accessible only in summer and autumn before heavy snows completely cut it off for months, Lukomir consists of traditional stone drystone cottages with steep wood-shingle and tin roofs designed to shed towering winter drifts. Elderly villagers still wear traditional hand-knitted woollen clothing, tend flocks of highland Pramenka sheep, and bake bread under the sač, while the surrounding high plateau is dotted with enigmatic medieval Bogomil stećci tombstones.
