Liepāja in 60 seconds

Perched on a narrow spit between the Baltic Sea and Lake Liepāja, Liepāja is Latvia's third-largest city, affectionately known as the 'City of the Wind' (Vēju pilsēta). Celebrated for its musical traditions, sweeping white quartz sand beaches and rich Art Nouveau wooden heritage, the city holds a dramatic dual personality. To the north lies Karosta, a colossal tsarist naval fortress constructed by Tsar Alexander III that remained a secretive Soviet military base until 1994. Today, Karosta draws curious travellers to its eerie red-brick military detention prison, golden-domed Orthodox Naval Cathedral, and atmospheric coastal artillery bunkers collapsing into the pounding surf. In the city centre, tree-lined boulevards lead to Seaside Park, the Latvian Musicians' Alley of Fame, and the Holy Trinity Cathedral, home to the world's largest mechanical pipe organ retaining its original wooden mechanism.

    Know before you go

    Getting in
Liepāja is connected to Riga by daily express buses (3 hours) and regular passenger trains departing from Riga Central Station.
    Amber hunting
Walk the beaches after an autumn or spring storm; small fragments of golden Baltic sea amber wash ashore in seaweed lines.
    Karosta safety
Take care when exploring the Northern Forts; concrete bunkers are crumbling into the sea and ground surfaces are uneven.
