Lake Bled in 60 seconds

With its teardrop-shaped islet afloat on emerald-green glacial waters and a thousand-year-old medieval castle clinging to a precipitous 130-metre limestone cliff, Lake Bled looks like a living romantic illustration. Surrounded by the forested peaks of the Julian Alps, this legendary Alpine basin has captivated travellers since the 19th-century Swiss hydrotherapist Arnold Rikli founded its first wellness sanatorium. Reach the island aboard a traditional flat-bottomed wooden pletna boat, propelled by standing oarsmen whose hereditary titles date back to Empress Maria Theresa, then climb the ninety-nine stone steps to ring the legendary wishing bell at the Church of the Mother of God. Walk the tranquil six-kilometre lakeside perimeter path at dawn, hike up to the Ojstrica viewpoint for the signature aerial postcard panorama, and reward yourself with a crisp slice of original Blejska kremna rezina (Bled cream cake) at the lakeside terrace.
