Koprivshtitsa in 60 seconds

Cradled in a green river valley of the Sredna Gora mountains, Koprivshtitsa is Bulgaria's most impeccably preserved National Revival museum-town, frozen in its 19th-century architectural splendor. Nearly four hundred historic mansions line its cobblestone lanes and arched stone bridges over the Topolnitsa River, painted in vibrant shades of cobalt blue, ochre yellow, and terracotta red with undulating baroque wooden eaves and wrought-iron balconies. It was here, on the Kalachev Bridge on 20 April 1876, that Todor Kableshkov fired the historic first shot of the April Uprising against Ottoman rule, signing the famous 'Blood Letter' that catalyzed European support for Bulgarian independence. Today, travelers wander peaceful cobblestone lanes where sheep graze on hillside meadows, visiting museum-houses preserved with exquisite carved ceilings, imported European furniture, and authentic guild workshops.
