High Tatras in 60 seconds

Rising abruptly from the northern Slovak plateau like a miniature alpine fortress, the High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry) form the highest mountain chain in the Carpathian arc. Protected as Slovakia's oldest national park (TANAP), the compact range features 25 summits exceeding 2,500 metres, jagged granite ridges, and over 100 crystal-clear glacial lakes known as pleso. The historic mountain resorts of Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec, and Tatranská Lomnica are stitched together by the scenic electric Tatra railway. Hikers can trek along the red-marked Tatranská Magistrála trail, warm up with steaming cabbage soup inside high-altitude mountain chalets (chata), and ride the spectacular red cable car to the weather station atop Lomnický štít at 2,634 metres.
