Hel Peninsula & Baltic Coast in 60 seconds

Curving gracefully into the Baltic Sea like a 35-kilometre sandy scythe, the Hel Peninsula (Mierzeja Helska) is one of Europe's most distinctive coastal geographic formations. At its narrowest barely one hundred metres wide, the spit separates the wild open surf of the Baltic from the shallow, warm, wind-kissed waters of Puck Bay—making it Poland's undisputed windsurfing and kitesurfing capital. From chic seaside Jurata to the historic Kashubian fishing port and seal sanctuary at Hel town, it offers breezy coastal magic.

Practical

Know before you go

Getting in
Polregio rail connects Gdynia Główna directly to all towns along the peninsula (Chałupy, Kuźnica, Jastarnia, Jurata, Hel) in 1 hour 15 min. In summer, Żegluga Gdańska passenger catamarans run from Gdańsk to Hel.
Summer traffic note
Road 216 down the narrow spit can become severely congested on summer weekends; travelling by train or by bicycle along the cycle path is vastly superior.
Dual coasts
The northern coast faces the open Baltic (wild surf, cooler water, deep sand); the southern coast faces Puck Bay (shallow, warmer, gentle, windsurfing).

Context

History in 5 minutes

Enough to make what you are looking at legible.

  1. 13th c.

Hel receives town rights, operating as an autonomous Kashubian fishing settlement.

  2. 1920s–1930s

Construction of the railway and modern seaside villas transforms Jurata into Poland's most fashionable interwar coastal retreat.

  3. 1939

Polish forces defend the fortified Hel peninsula for 32 days, becoming the final military garrison to surrender during the invasion.
