Haapsalu in 60 seconds

Nicknamed the 'Venice of the North' for its sheltering coastal bays, Haapsalu is an aristocratic seaside resort town on western Estonia's coast, world-famous for its delicate knitted lace shawls and therapeutic curative sea mud. In the 19th century, Russian tsars and luminaries including Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky flocked to Haapsalu for seaside cures, leaving behind an exceptional legacy of wooden lace gingerbread architecture, a splendid seaside promenade with a floating wooden Kuursaal (resort hall), and an ornate 216-metre covered imperial railway platform built exclusively for Tsar Nicholas II. At the centre of town rises the atmospheric 13th-century Episcopal Castle, where the spectral White Lady is said to appear in the chapel window every August during the full moon.
