Gjirokastër in 60 seconds

Perched dramatically on the slopes of the Mali i Gjerë mountain above the Drino Valley, UNESCO World Heritage Gjirokastër is celebrated as the 'City of Stone'. Its monumental landscape is dominated by fortified seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Ottoman tower-houses known as kulla—limestone mansions with slate-tile roofs, wooden cantilevered balconies, and internal cisterns designed to withstand clan feuds and mountain winters. Crowning the town is the colossal Gjirokastër Fortress, containing captured military artillery, an American jet plane, and sprawling stone battlements surveying the valley.
