Druskininkai in 60 seconds

Cradled by ancient Scots pine forests along the bends of the Nemunas River in southern Lithuania, Druskininkai is the Baltic region's oldest and most renowned mineral spa resort. Granted official health resort status in 1837 by Tsar Nicholas I, Druskininkai has drawn wellness seekers for nearly two centuries thanks to its highly saline mineral springs, therapeutic peat muds, and microclimate heavily saturated with healing pine terpenes and negative ions. Beyond its lavish contemporary wellness sanatoriums, thermal waterparks and cable cars gliding over the river canopy, the town holds deep cultural allure: it was the beloved childhood home of visionary painter and composer M. K. Čiurlionis. On the town outskirts lies Grūtas Park, an extraordinary open-air museum where scores of monumental Lenin, Stalin and Soviet propaganda sculptures salvaged from public squares are exhibited along forest boardwalks.
