Đerdap & Golubac Fortress in 60 seconds

Where the Danube suddenly broadens into a vast inland sea before slicing through the southern Carpathian mountains, Đerdap National Park and Golubac Fortress form one of Europe's most dramatic river frontiers. Guarding the northern threshold of the gorge, the 14th-century fortress of Golubac clings tenaciously to sheer limestone cliffs with nine restored stone towers rising directly out of the deep green waters. Beyond the fortress, the Danube plunges into the Iron Gates (Gvozdena Vrata)—a 100-kilometre canyon system flanked by 300-metre cliffs where the prehistoric river civilization of Lepenski Vir flourished 8,000 years ago and Roman Emperor Trajan carved his legendary military road into the living rock.
