České Budějovice in 60 seconds

Founded in 1265 by King Přemysl Otakar II at the confluence of the Vltava and Malše rivers, České Budějovice is the dignified, historic capital of South Bohemia. Its centerpiece is one of Central Europe's grandest urban spaces: a monumental one-hectare square encircled by unbroken Baroque and Renaissance vaulted arcades, centred around the sculpted Samson's Fountain and surveyed by the 72-metre Black Tower. Beyond its elegant plazas, the city is world-famous as the home of Budweiser Budvar—the state-owned national brewery whose crisp, slow-matured golden lager has been brewed here for centuries from Moravian malt, whole Saaz hops, and pristine 300-metre artesian well water.
