Bran Castle in 60 seconds

Perched dramatically atop a 60-metre limestone crag guarding the historic mountain pass between Transylvania and Wallachia, Bran Castle is one of Central Europe's most evocative medieval fortresses. Built by the Saxons of Kronstadt in 1377 by royal decree of King Louis I of Hungary, the castle served for centuries as a vital border garrison and customs post. In the twentieth century, the fortress was gifted to Queen Marie of Romania, who transformed its cold defensive stone chambers into a romantic royal summer retreat filled with Romanian folk carvings, ceramic hearths, and period antiques. While Victorian novelist Bram Stoker's fictional Dracula placed the vampire count in a similar mountain redoubt, the authentic history of Bran is grounded in Saxon trade defense and Romanian royal heritage.
