Bojnice in 60 seconds

With its slender pastel turrets, steep conical rooftops, and swan-filled moat, Bojnice Castle looks like an illustration lifted straight from a fairytale book. Reimagined in the late nineteenth century by Count Ján Pálffy along the romantic lines of French Loire Valley châteaux, the castle is built atop a massive travertine hill that conceals a natural karst dripstone cave directly below the moat. The grand state rooms are filled with Venetian mirrors, carved ceiling woodwork, and the fourteenth-century Nardo di Cione altar from Florence. Outside the castle gates stands a legendary 700-year-old linden tree beneath which King Matthias Corvinus signed royal decrees, while adjacent thermal springs feed tranquil spa pools and Slovakia's oldest zoological gardens.
