Banská Štiavnica in 60 seconds

Tucked deep inside the ancient caldera of an extinct volcano in the Štiavnica Mountains, Banská Štiavnica is one of Europe's most enchanting medieval mining towns. Once the silver capital of the Kingdom of Hungary, the town was so technologically advanced that Empress Maria Theresa founded the world's first mining academy here in 1762. Today, its UNESCO-listed historic core climbs steeply along terraced cobblestone hillsides, flanked by the Renaissance Old Castle, the Italianate New Castle, and the dramatic hilltop Baroque Calvary. Hidden in the surrounding forested hills is an ingenious network of seventeenth-century artificial reservoirs (tajchy), constructed to power mine pumps and now offering idyllic summer swimming in pristine mountain water.
