Alba Iulia in 60 seconds

Set at the confluence of the Mureș and Ampoi rivers in southern Transylvania, Alba Iulia is a monumental citadel city whose historic layers span over two millennia. As Roman Apulum, it was the headquarters of the XIII Gemina Legion and the richest Roman city in Dacia. In the eighteenth century, the Habsburg Empire transformed the hilltop into Alba Carolina, the largest and most impressive Vauban-style star fortress in Southeastern Europe, featuring seven bastions, ornate baroque gates carved with mythological reliefs, and deep grassy moats. Alba Iulia holds a sacred place in national memory: Michael the Brave first united the Romanian principalities here in 1600, the historic Great National Assembly proclaimed the unification of Transylvania with Romania here on 1 December 1918, and King Ferdinand and Queen Marie were crowned monarchs of Greater Romania in the Coronation Cathedral in 1922.
